Computed Tomography (CT) is a widely used three-dimensional imaging method, which employs penetrating capabilities of photons and dedicated mathematical algorithms to reconstruct and visualize internal structures of objects. X-ray scattering and diffraction allow probing nanoscale features in bulk samples and reconstruction of nanostructures. In this way, we have not a single scalar value per voxel, but structural information, commonly expressed through spherical harmonics.

In this thesis, you will develop a visualization tool for state-of-the-art imaging techniques, such as scattering and diffraction tomography. Visualization of spherical harmonics is a challenging task, especially for higher orders, as they are highly irregular. Glyphs is a common way to visualize them. However, CT produces a dense glyphs field, which is expensive to render and hard to study and interpret. Therefore, you need to find a way to represent complex multi-aspect information on the plot in an easy to interpret fashion. A major challenge here is to find a suitable compromise between the level of details, interpretability, and speed. Where applicable, complimentary visualization approaches will be proposed to highlight various aspects of obtained structural information. A dynamic user interface is anticipated to guide users through different visualization modes, allow blow-up of details in the region of interest, etc.

Persönliche Qualifikation

Good programming skills and experience in 3D visualization are required. A solid background in mathematics, prior experience with tomographic data, and a working knowledge of VTK/Paraview is a plus.
