ITAS 07-21 Master Thesis: Prospective Life cycle assessment of emerging battery technologies

Eintrag vom 25.05.2021
Angebotsnr. ITAS 07-21
Stelle ist zu besetzen ab: offen/nach Absprache

Beschreibung

Batteries have been increasingly used as energy storage technologies in the in many applications, including automobiles, electronic equipment’s and stationary energy storage systems due to high specific energy densities, low self-discharge rates and long cycling lifespans. Solid state batteries (SSBs) have a lot of advantages over commercially available battery chemistries regarding their potential energy density and safety aspects. Therefore, their targeted applications are diverse and promising for example in the EV sector. Regarding the sustainability performance of the new battery there is only litte information available. Therefore it is planned to investigate in a prospective manner the potential environmental impacts of solid state batteries, also p to avoid undesired effects on the environment.

Within the scope of the above-mentioned topic description, your tasks include:

  • Familiarization with the topic of energy storage systems
  • Current state of solid-state battery technologies (literature review)
  • Familiarization with the subject life cycle assessment methodology
  • Assessment and comparison of different solid electrolytes for the solid-state batteries using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology
  • Optional based on the time (Study can be extended to analyse life cycle environmental impacts for the full battery cell)
  • Clear presentation and discussion of the results

A personal conversation to present the topic is possible at any time.

Persönliche Qualifikation

  • Masters student from chemical engineering / process engineering, bio-engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, geo-ecology, economics, environmental sciences and other related courses
  • Previous knowledge and experience in the area of life cycle assessment
