IPE 13-21 Master Thesis: K-space based reflection imaging for 3D USCT III

Entry from the 08.11.2021
Position number IPE 13-21
Job vacancy to be filled from: offen/nach Absprache

At KIT a novel imaging method, 3D Ultrasound Tomography (3D USCT), is under development. In this method ultrasound signals are used to reconstruct 3D volumes of the female breast for early breast cancer diagnosis. Hundreds of ultrasound transducer array systems (so called TAS) were designed and built. The transducers act both as receiver and emitter and are positioned around a measurement container (see Fig.1, top center of the patient bed). The measurement container is filled with water, which acts as medium for the waves – multi-spectral, broadband reflection and transmission signals are collected and processed.

For the image reconstruction several algorithms are in use for the USCT system. The synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) is applied for reconstruction of reflectivity. With this method the ultrasound signals are back-projected in the spatial image domain. While this approach is simple and robust it has several disadvantages: a large computational demand and quality limited by interpolation. A faster, less resource consuming alternative would be a Fourierspace based K-space approach.

A prototype was implemented in Matlab, which was successfully tested with simulated data. In this work the algorithm should be adapted and expanded for use of the experimental USCT III data. A further goal is the implementation of a homogeneous distribution of the data contribution of the sparse spatial sensor information. The implementation should be evaluated with simulations and experiments, imaging and performance metrics should be extracted and the system compared with state-of-the art SAFT implementations. The work will be finalized with a report and presentation.
